WHAT EXACTLY ARE CNC POD & RAIL WORK CENTRES?

A CNC pod & rail work centre is a sophisticated production tool. Various machining procedures can be performed using CNC machinery. The CNC Machining Centre is described in terms of its types and functions below. The CNC machine work centre is a high-precision, high-quality, and high-surface-finish manufacturing tool that can execute a wide range of machining operations. Drilling, milling, and routing operations are all possible with a CNC pod & rail work centre. In the joinery industry in particular there are a multitude of configurations available on a CNC work centre to perform various tasks ranging from stair, window and door manufacturing through to the bespoke and custom joinery. 

WHAT EXACTLY ARE CNC 5 AXIS MACHINES?

CNC 5-axis machining opens us a world of possibilities in terms of part sizes and shapes that may be processed. The number of directions in which the cutting tool can move is referred to as the 5-axis. To approach the workpiece from any direction, the cutting tool on a CNC 5-axis machining centre moves across the X, Y, and Z linear axes as well as spins on the A and B axes. In other words, a single setup can handle five sides of a part. 

WHAT IS THE CNC 5 AXIS MACHINES’ BENEFITS?

  • For enhanced efficiency, machining complex geometries.
  • Minimization of tooling costs.
  • Increase through output and cash flow while reducing lead times.
  • Because the workpiece does not move between multiple working centres the part precision is improved.
  • Due to the complexities required for the use of a 5-axis machining Centre, there is a huge increase in safety due to the typical manual or traditional machining practices being obsolete.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE POD & RAIL MACHINES?

Pod & Rail Machines utilize a rail (Console) with suction cups (Pods) placed on the rail. The rails are able to be positioned anywhere along the X Axis of the machine and the suction cups (Pods) can be moved anywhere along the rail (Console). This allows different shapes and sizes of parts to be held down on the suction cups (Pods) and allows for unobstructed and elevated machining of the work piece.

WHAT ARE POD & RAIL MACHINES’ ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES?

There are a variety of consoles available, each with distinct clamping options based on the appropriate suction cups (see suction cup). Automatic loading, e.g. through robot, is also possible with self-adjusting machine pods and rail machines.

ADVANTAGES
  • Suction cups are accurately sized and placed without difficulty.
  • Setting up is simple and quick.
  • Horizontal processing with larger aggregates is also possible via a gap between the consoles.
  • Different clamping devices can be used in a variety of ways.
  • There are a plethora of setup assistance and automatic-systems available.
  DISADVANTAGES
  • There is no support for a completely flat workpiece example nested based manufacturing.
  • The position and amount of suction cups utilized are always determined by the consoles.
